Paul Chiang Art Center: Sowing the Seeds of Beauty

Allowing children to be surrounded by beauty and immersed in music is my main purpose in creating this art center.” – Paul Chiang

Nurturing a sense of beauty is sometimes not from the children, but from the adults who first step in. Aesthetics education comes after being moved. When teachers and parents are touched by beauty, children will also slowly draw near. Standing before a work of art, when we ask children, “What do you see?” we do not expect an immediate response. Instead, we give them space to imagine, allowing them to weave their own stories from the work. They do not need to “understand” the painting. Rather, it is a place that permits free expression, where they can say with boundless imagination, “I feel this painting looks like…” The art center exists precisely for such possibilities.

A French Musical Feast in the Afternoon

On August 16, the “Trio d'Anches Sen” performed at the Paul Chiang Art Center, presenting a program centered on French Impressionist works. The musicians, upon arriving, said, “The acoustics here are so beautiful, it feels as if we are performing inside a painting!”

From the lighthearted Minuet to the dreamlike Nocturne, the concert concluded with the bright and leisurely Tambourin, perfectly echoing the art center’s atmosphere where nature and art harmoniously merge. View photos from the event
Paving the Way for Children’s Aesthetic Learning

Before the new school year began, on a day when the art center was closed to the public, teachers from Junyi School of Innovation in Taitung gathered at the Paul Chiang Art Center for a consensus camp. Through group tours, art experiences, and guided questions such as “What is your favorite color? What life experience does it remind you of?” – they explored new possibilities for teaching.

Performing arts teacher Pei Chih Lan, who led one of the experiences, remarked, “Chiang’s works contain much blank space and room for imagination. They allow one to see both the simple and the multiple worlds at the same time, which is perfect for sparking creativity.” For the teachers, the art center was not only a place for exhibitions but also a starting point for inspiration and creative teaching.

Light Picture Book

The first picture book centered on the works of Paul Chiang tells, in poetic language, the life story of his continual search for light. Light is a book for all ages – It can accompany children through moments of solitude and also bring healing to every adult.

Each artwork is presented in full-page spreads, with vivid layers of color and brushstrokes that leap from the page. Proceeds from the book’s sales will support the Paul Chiang Art Center’s Sustainable Development Fund. See more publications
