Introduction by Mei-Chun Chou

Inspired by Paul Chiang's In the Garden of Light and Sketches from Europe, "Light through Piano and Chant" explores memory, transformation, and belonging through piano and voice. Rooted in the landscapes of Taitung and shaped by experiences abroad, the performance reflects on the enduring bond between land, culture, and the human spirit.

A Fugue in Three Voices

Seeking Light
In the first glimmer of dawn, searching for the hidden traces of origin

This opening section is an inward search for roots. Beginning with the primal sounds of the earth, it evokes the spiritual shelter formed by childhood memories, church music, and the landscape of Taitung before the journey into the wider world began.

  • Opening Chant|Traditional Paiwan Chant
The Soliloquy of the Land: Zepulj's clear yet profound voice awakens ancient memories carried within the bloodline.
  • Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata in D Major, K.213
  • J. S. Bach / Egon Petri: Sheep May Safely Graze
  • Alexander Scriabin: Étude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 2 No. 1

Flowing Light
A journey through Europe, memory, and self-discovery

Here, the young artist's years abroad unfold across the keyboard. Europe becomes a canvas, solitude becomes a brush, and music becomes a dialogue between selfhood and tradition.

  • Interlude|Ancestral Chant from Afar
A Reflection of Longing: Once again, Zepulj's voice emerges from the silence, carrying a distant light from Taitung and revealing the homesickness hidden within the soul.
  • Felix Mendelssohn / Franz Liszt: On Wings of Song
  • Alexander Scriabin: Étude Op. 8 No. 12
  • Robert Schumann / Franz Liszt: Widmung (Dedication)

Harmonious Light
Transformation, reconciliation, and return

All wandering, struggle, and longing eventually settle into a deeper stillness. Here, outer transformation and inner belonging are reconciled. Within Paul Chiang's In the Garden of Light, the energy gathered from life's journey becomes a compassionate radiance that embraces all things.

  • Frédéric Chopin: Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23

The emotional heart of the recital, filled with youthful longing, destiny, and transcendence. Through it, the sea breeze of Taitung seems to flow through the pianist's fingertips, allowing the experiences forged abroad to blossom anew in the soil of home.

  • Finale|Improvisation and Soundscapes of the Land

A Great Confluence of Piano and Ancestral Chant

Zepulj's chant returns one final time, intertwining with improvised harmonies. Piano and mother tongue become inseparable. All journeys, conflicts, and aspirations converge in the sea breeze of Jinzun, dissolving into a profound sense of freedom and release.

"Light through Piano and Chant" is always waiting for us on the road home.
