The Paul Chiang Art Center will unveil its second major exhibition, In the Garden of Light & Sketches from Europe, on October 25, 2025. Featuring Chiang’s latest works created across Taitung, Paris, and Lisbon, the exhibition extends his long exploration of light and its spiritual resonance in art. Chiang spent the summer working in Paris and Lisbon—mainly in Lisbon—from which emerged new series that reflect the dialogue between place, perception, and the passage of time.

The exhibition brings together Sketches from Europe, In the Garden of Light, Jazz / Jinzun, and Meditation on Eternity—a work dedicated to 9/23 Floodwaters in Hualien—revealing the artist’s evolving sensitivity and enduring vitality at age 83.

Transfigured Night 94-01 and Sketches from Europe series

“Light is the essence of everything I create,” Chiang says. In the Garden of Light, vibrant hues and bold contrasts channel pure energy, while Sketches from Europe captures the crisp light of Lisbon through oil stick on rough paper, like a traveler’s visual diary. Selected works from the series will rotate throughout the exhibition period, offering returning visitors something new to encounter each time.

Paul Chiang's studio (First Gallery)

A special highlight is the Open Studio, which restores the first gallery to Chiang’s former studio—an immersive setting where visitors can sense the genesis of his art. The artist continues to paint here daily, embodying the idea of a “living museum” that grows with each act of creation.

About Paul and the Paul Chiang Art Center

Born in Taichung in 1942, Paul Chiang studied in Paris and lived in New York for three decades before returning to Taiwan in 1998. Since settling in Taitung in 2008, he has created luminous series such as Pisirian, On Wings of Song, and Jinzun.

“Taitung has given me a second artistic life,” he says. Opened in March 2025 with support from the Alliance Cultural Foundation, the Paul Chiang Art Center integrates nature, art, and architecture, and serves as a platform connecting Taiwan’s east coast with the world.
