Inspired by Paul Chiang's lifelong pursuit of light, pianist Mei-Chun Chou has shaped this concert around three chapters of his journey — from carving light out of darkness, to letting it filter through, to finding it crystallized within.
I. Carving Light
Early in his career, Paul Chiang faced solitude in a studio with sealed windows — light had to be willed into existence, chiseled out through discipline and faith. This first movement mirrors that inward struggle, where structure and silence give way to the soul's first sound.
- Bach: Chaconne
The solitary foundation — each double-stop strikes like a chisel against stone. - Franck: Violin Sonata
Piano and violin in dialogue — the first thread of light slipping through a crack.
II. Filtering Light
At the Art Center, light is never still — it passes through architecture, canvas, and breath. In the sea wind and sun of Jinzun, the self becomes weightless, open, permeable.
- Debussy: Clair de lune
Harmonics and arpeggios dissolve light into something liquid — the soul unguarded. - Mendelssohn: Song Without Words
Melody without words — the openness of a life that has learned to receive.
III. Crystallized Light
After all the searching, light is no longer distant — it is the eternal stillness of the present moment, pure and unframed, like the colors in Paul Chiang's paintings.
- Arvo Pärt: Spiegel im Spiegel
Not a search, but an arrival. Piano as pulse; violin as unbroken light. - Massenet: Méditation from Thaïs
Music as compassion — a gentle embrace of life transcended. - Richard Strauss: Morgen!
A closing moment of completion — all darkness and silence resolved into tomorrow.
